Synopsis
On the streets of New Delhi, every day is a struggle to survive. But AMAL, a simple, humble autorickshaw driver, is content with the small but vital role he plays — to drive his customers throughout the city as efficiently and safely as possible.

Following a tragic incident with a young beggar girl (PRIYA), Amal’s purpose is thrown into disarray. Compelled by his kind nature, Amal struggles, alongside the lovely merchant Pooja, to do whatever it takes to raise enough money to save the child’s life.

As Amal continues to struggle, trouble ensues in the upper caste system - the implications of which threaten to unravel his life and those around him. But just as destiny led Amal astray, it allows him to re-discover his purpose and find peace in life - something all the riches in the world could never have brought him.

Screenings to be followed by Q & A with the filmmakers

11am – 12:30pm
Screening: ALONE IN FOUR WALLS (www.lingeron.com)
Director: Alexandra “Sasha” Westmeire ; Country: Germany and Russia
Synopsis: Alexandra Westmeier‘s absorbing and beautifully shot film spends time with these boys, inmates at a reform school. They talk about their crimes, some boastfully, others regretfully, and some with a defeated matter-of-factness that reveals how little choice they feel they have had in their lives. We observe their daily routines, watch them learn, work and play. We hear them speak candidly of home, which was in many cases chaotic and violent, and we see for ourselves the kind of environment in which some of them grew up, having to cope with poverty, alcoholism and abuse. And we see that this place, with its structure and discipline, its security and relative normality, may just offer them an escape into a more hopeful future.
